OUR TIMELINE
Established in 1974 at Montclair State College (now University), the IAPC is the world’s oldest organization devoted to young people’s philosophical practice. But our story begins before that, in the teaching, scholarship, and imagination of our founders, Matthew Lipman and Ann Margaret Sharp.
1969
Matthew Lipman writes the first Philosophy for Children curricular novel,
Harry Stottlemeier's Discovery, for ages 11-12, with the support of the
National Endowment for the Humanities, while teaching at the College of
Pharmaceutical Sciences, Columbia University.
